Susan’s interest in nature conservation began in childhood. In sixth grade, she won first place in the Florida Dade County Fair for her project on wild ducks. Growing up in a military family and then marrying a Foreign Service Officer, she had opportunities to study nature in a wide variety of habitats, and to volunteer with environmental organizations on three continents. She is especially proud of introducing children of many nationalities to the wonder of nature.
She and her husband now reside in Nelson County, where they live in an 18th century house on land that is under a conservation easement with The Nature Conservancy. Susan serves on Nelson County’s Ag/Forestal Districts Advisory Committee, Sturt Nature Preserve Steering Committee, and The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen (as a non-owner board member). For the past nine years, she has led an annual butterfly count for the North American Butterfly Association, and she regularly leads nature rambles for a variety of other organizations. In 2016, she was selected as Volunteer of the Year by the VA Master Naturalist program. |
